Most healthcare COOs come to operational leadership through the business side — finance, strategy, administration. My path was different.
I started at the bedside. As a clinician, I understood what care delivery actually looked like from the inside — the physician relationships, the operational friction, the gap between what administrators designed and what actually happened in practice. That clinical foundation shaped everything that came after.
As I moved from clinician to operator to executive, I carried that perspective into every operational role I held. It changed how I diagnosed problems, how I earned physician trust, and how I designed solutions that worked in the real world of care delivery — not just on paper. In healthcare, that distinction is decisive. Physicians know immediately whether the person across the table has ever stood where they stand. That credibility either opens the door to alignment or closes it.
After 30 years of health system leadership — building service lines, leading through crises, driving operational turnarounds — I made a deliberate decision to leave corporate healthcare and build Malloy & Co. Operating Partnerships.
It wasn't burnout. It wasn't circumstance. It was clarity.
The work I do best — and the work that produces the most meaningful results — sits at the intersection of clinical credibility and operational execution. In a full-time executive seat, that work competes with everything else that comes with the role. As a Fractional COO, I get to bring both skill sets to bear completely — embedded inside organizations that need exactly that combination, focused entirely on the operational challenges that drive my passion, without the dilution of everything else.
